It can be pretty tough to stop thinking about all that we dont have in our professional lives and just enjoy the stuffing and pumpkin pie (my favorite). But did you stop to think about all the good things you do have? Boardroom in the Bedroom

Boardroom in the BedroomBoardroom in the BedroomIn exasperation at familiar and new products or services, no doubt its occurred to you that were you in charge, sure as shootin you could do better than that. In point of fact, sometimes a great notion can grow into a small geschftsleben. Even hobbies have been parlayed into a viable venture by the savvy entrepreneur. Witness Mrs. Field and her home-made cookies, now an internationally known brand. The former housewife of nearly two decades ago just had confidence that delicious morsels she baked were better than any you could buy in the stores. She followed her dream. By good luck, today such enterprises are increasingly accessible. Significantly, razzle-dazzle technology opens the gates for people with a broad range of disabilities, and high-tech equipment to launch a home-based business is mora affordable than ever-the cost of ones very own Web site has plummeted to as low as $40-knocking down the price of admission to the entrepren eurial arena from tens of thousands of dollars to $1,000 or less for the basic desktop, printer, fax and phone setup with Web link. Youre up and running, with all the benefits of a self-assured freelancer The time, angst and cost of commuting is history, as is the daily commitment to 9 to 5, which is problematic for a number of people with disabilities. If you think that running a businesses might be for you, dont make a move without researching first. While there is a wide variety of legitimate ready-made business opportunities offered beware of the get-rich-quick-guaranteed moneymakers. The classifieds are filled withtraps for the unwary, so do your homework boning up on books by reputable authors such as Paul and Sarah Edwards Best Home Businesses of the 90s or Jay Conrad Levinson of Guerilla Marketing fame who can help point you in the right direction. You also need to read yourself carefully. Are you a risk-taker? A problem-solver? It takes both, big time. Have you where your r eal interests and talents lie? If not, wait and go back to the drawing board. Can you sell yourself as well as your product or service? Know your niche, by applying the same process of analysis to your business idea. Will it fill an unmet or poorly covered need in your target community? This is work, too, requiring additional digging on your part. Experts recommend putting together a detailed business plan with a market analysis based on data profiling the customer base, projected cash flow and marketing strategies, cash flow and so on. Its a complicated, work-intensive process, but should you require funding, a watertight business plan will help you avoid pitfalls. The work, remember, is no less than captaining a successful business. One pertinent statistic from the banking industry states that entrepreneurs who have a disability and who have prepared a business plan have a 97% repayment only a 3% default rate on their loans.I meet people all the time who are ready, willing and ab le for profitable self-employment in spite of acknowledged limitations. For so many of these energetic CEOs the technology that leveled the playing field opened the door of opportunity that would be the envy of any era. From 1990 to 1995, the Department of Labor reported an impressive 20% increase in business startups by people with severe disabilities. The entrepreneurial spirit is something that is beyond ones individual disability. Obviously, a man or woman may have limitations of movement, sight and speech yet still have a razor-sharp mind for business. Whether or not you end up rich as Croesus, your own personal industry in the business world awaits you.

Part Car, Part Motorcycle, All Eco-Friendly

Part Car, Part Motorcycle, All Eco-Friendly Part Car, Part Motorcycle, All Eco-Friendly Part Car, Part Motorcycle, All Eco-FriendlyIt may sound counterintuitive for a technology-driven startup to include no new technology as one of four carved-in-stone design principles to be followed, but thats exactly what Paul Elio did when he founded Elio Motors.A few years back when Elio, an engineer and automotive enthusiast, looked at the lay of the land, he vowed to come up with a highly fuel-efficient car that everyone could afford, and the company welches born. That was 2008. Today, Elio Motors expects its three-wheeled, two-passenger Elio, classified as a motorcycle but designed and equipped like a car, tolaunch in the fourth quarter of 2016.Elio started the company with four must-haves as part of his vision affordability (now pegged at $6,800), high fuel efficiency (84 mpg), the highest safety ratings, and no new technology. We strongly believe that technical risk for a startup is a death knell, says Hari Iyer, Elio Motors COO and a board member, because solving technical issues will take months longer than planned and be costly. Even with a commitment to no new technology whenever possible, funding has been one of Elio Motors biggest challenges.Paul Elio and his car. Image Elio MotorsWe do have innovation, says Iyer, also an engineer. Its architectural innovation, which he said Paul Elio likens to wheels on luggage, taking two known technologies and coming up with something different. Its the same thing with our vehicle. Whenever possible, the vehicle uses proven technology. When you work with a large kollektiv, it is easy to lose focus of goals. Engineers being engineers, they love to do new stuff, Iyer says. Its very important to harness and channel all the creative energy of engineers and go in the same direction. However, Its easier said than done to stay true to the no new technology canon, he admitted. Elio Motors learned the hard way. Engineers came up with the idea for a door they called a scissor door that would rotate out a little and then swing up to avoid little dings when in a tight space. Only after the engineering was completed did it become apparent that the door had a lot of complexity, meaning a greater technical risk and cost. While it solved the door ding problem, it created other issues of which the kollektiv hadnt thought For example, howwould the scissor door open inside a garage without hitting the garage ceiling? We knew the canons of the project vision but we couldnt help ourselves, Iyer says. When you have smart engineers, thats a natural trap of the process. After that, the team re-committed to the no-new-technology principle. It was challenging to work so disciplined, Iyer says. We had to go through the process to completely internalize that goal. Its not that we dont want really cool ideas. Its about taking technical risk and which ones have technical risk or not. There were many other, smaller examples, but the team f igured out how to assess risk quickly, such as with a windshield wiper. One idea was to use an inexpensive, off-the-shelf water bottle and put the assembly motor for pumping the fluid on top. In concept that sounds like a great idea, but when we did the economics, most of the cost is not in the bottle but in the motor, so being able to integrate the motor into an existing model was not as risky and thus less costly, Iyer says. These issues had to be addressed because of unique aspects of the vehicle, for example, the height being the same as other vehicles but only half the width. In order for the windshield wiper to have the right coverage, it had to be the same length as a standard wiper but provide half the coverage on width. We were able to overcome this with help from our suppliers, Iyer says. He says major supplier-partners contribute in a big way to the global optimum solution. Typically, Elio and suppliers meet regularly as a team to resolve issues. The Elio will feature a 55- horsepower engine. Image Elio MotorsAnother challenge was to find a powertrain. Trying to use as many off-the-shelf items as possible, the engineers looked at various options. But if the vehicle used an engine designed for the smallest existing car, it would be 30% less efficient on the Elio because the vehicle is half the weight of a subcompact. Operating conditions for a lighter vehicle are different from a heavier vehicle, Iyer explained. A decision was made that the best solution would be for powertrain systems developer IAV to design an engine specifically for the Elio.Paul Elios vision also incorporated his desire to have a positive energy/environmental impact and a socioeconomic impact. We feel we have a better green story than electric vehicles, Iyer says. If the Elio sells the volume we expect it to sell, it will reduce in a five-year period U.S. fuel consumption by 0.35%.Its very fashionable to talk about electric vehicles, but at 84 miles per gallon, we are 85% of the way there, and were doing so at one-fifth to one-tenth of the cost of the vehicle. Which will have a bigger impact? As for its socioeconomic impact, Iyer says its Shreveport, LA manufacturing facility and supply base will provide 3,000 jobs and an estimated 18,000 additional jobs indirectly. We feel good about having that kind of impact as well, Iyer says.Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. For Further DiscussionWe strongly believe that technical risk for a startup is a death knell.Hari Iyer COO and Board Member, Elio Motors

8 Essential Tips for Writing Your Resume

8 Essential Tips for Writing Your Resume 8 Essential Tips for Writing Your Resume Sell your hard skills effectively with these resume writing tips. How much time does a recruiter spend reviewing a potential hire? 60 seconds? 30 seconds? 10 seconds?Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of job seekers are granted even less. On average, employers only spend about six seconds reviewing a resume before making the initial decision on a candidate. So what’s the key to securing an interview? Having a well-written, compelling resume.Need help getting started? Here are eight tips for writing your ideal resume.1. Start your resume with a branding statement.Rather than beginning with a traditional objective statement, consider using a branding statement to make your resume stand out. What’s the difference? An objective statement only allows the job seeker to describe his or her talents in relation to a particular position. A branding statement, on the other hand, doesn’t focus on a particular position or industry. Instead, it allows the job seeker to sum up his/her ta lents and translatable skills in one definitive sentence. Here’s an example of an objective statement: “Talented social media marketing professional seeks position as an associate at a small to medium size clothing retailer.”Now here is a branding statement for the same job seeker: “Fashion savvy social marketing wiz with experience running successful marketing campaigns incorporating Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr.”Cleary one is more descriptive than the other, but what does this mean to potential employers? In the past, human resources personnel posted jobs with the sole intent of filling a single position. While this is still frequently the goal today, more and more companies are seeking out talent and will create a place for well-qualified individuals within their organizations if the candidate is a good fit. Start your resume with a branding statement to show how you could be a valuable asset to your target companies.2. Use key words that match the job descri ptionMost job search websites allow their users to search for positions by keywords. They also offer the same feature to employers looking to hire new talent. If you find that searching certain keywords return results that interest you, incorporate those keywords into your resume. This will catch the eyes of recruiters. It won’t guarantee that you will be asked to come in for an interview, but it will probably put your resume at the top of their list. This isn’t the only reason you should be using keywords, however. Many companies today use preliminary software that targets specific words and phrases in order to determine which resumes should be flagged for further review. If you strategically place keywords in your resume, there’s a better chance it will be forwarded on to a breathing HR professional.3. Customize your resume for the potential positionThere’s no rule that you must submit the same resume to every potential employer. In fact, you shouldn’t.Many people want to know how to create their perfect resume, but the truth is, it doesn’t exist. Each potential employer has different priorities, and there is nothing wrong in tailoring a resume to suit their individual needs. Take the extra time to highlight education, job, and volunteer experiences that match what each specific employer is looking for.4. Be conservative when it comes to format and styleDon’t be tempted by creative fonts and formatting; it’s distracting and unprofessional. Instead, choose a classic font such as Arial, Times New Roman, Calibri, or Verdana. Also, avoid using excessive amounts of bold, italics, and other features. This can confuse resume scanning software. If you do decide to use bold or italics in titles and headings, it must be used consistently.5. Prioritize your resumeHere’s the truth: the majority of recruiters only scan about the first half of the first page of your resume. This means that you only have roughly four inches or so of text to make a lasting impression. You must put the experiences and skills that you want potential employers to see it in that space. If you fail to catch their attention, they will move on to the next resume.6. Don’t over shareToo many job seekers make the mistake of including too much information in the job history section of their resume. For example, if you have 20 years of experience working for multiple companies, performing the same duties and functions, there is no reason to include excessive details about each role. Instead, include the most recent position, and make reference to your years of experience in your particular industry. You can fill in the blanks during the interview.7. Follow the employers’ instructions when submitting your resumeThere’s nothing that will get a resume sent to the recycling bin faster than failing to follow basic submission instructions. Common directives might include: submitting the resume as a specific file type, using a specific format when titling the file , including specific information in the subject line of the email, using a specific font type and size, and/or submitting the resume through the company website instead of email. Sometimes, these instructions are given because the employer has special software requirements. However, in other cases, it is used as a way to test the job seeker’s ability to follow instructions.8. Be honestWhile it is okay to emphasize certain things about your work history and minimize others, it is never okay to be dishonest. Employers will check your claims. When they do, make sure there aren’t any unpleasant surprises.

9 Signs You Didnt Land the Job

9 Signs You Didn’t Land the Job 9 Signs You Didn’t Land the Job How to know when you won’t be getting a call-back after the job interview. You met with fewer people. You were supposed to meet with three different people in the department, but after the first interview, they sent you on your merry way. Unless the entire team suddenly came down with the flu, don’t expect to receive a call back from the company.Your interview is cut short. Perhaps your interview was expected to last an hour, but the interviewer wrapped things up in the first 15 minutes. If your interview experience went something like this, it’s not a good sign. The interviewer keeps emphasizing a skill you don’t have.If the interviewer continues to mention the importance of a skill you either don’t possess or have little experience in, then it could be an indication the employer is looking for a different kind of candidate. The interviewer is ‘going through the motions.’When the interviewer seems disinterested in what you have to say, is asking questions that sound a little too rehearsed, or is checking their email, texting, or staring at the clo ck while you’re talking to them, it’s not a good sign. You didn’t learn more about the position. If the interviewer isn’t elaborating on the role and responsibilities, then there’s a good chance they don’t think you’re the right fit for the position. You hadn’t researched the company.Employers want to know you took the initiative to learn more about their organization. With the ubiquity of social media and mobile technology, there’s no excuse for entering an interview unprepared. You didn’t have any questions. When you don’t have anything to ask your interviewers, it sends the signal you’re not really interested in the role. If you can’t think of at least one question to ask each interviewer, your candidacy could be called into question. You asked about their vacation policy. When your initial questions have nothing to do with the role and everything to do with the company’s perks, don’t expect a call back. Employers are looking for candidates with different priorities. The next steps are vague. If the recruiter can’t give you a sense of when they’ll follow up or continuously mentions that they’re ‘interviewing many other people’ for the role, this could be a sign that you’re not a top contender. While these rules aren’t set in stone, if you experienced one or more of the following circumstances during your interview, it might be time to concentrate on other job opportunities.

How to Know Youre Qualified For Your Job - The Muse

How to Know Youre Qualified For Your Job - The Muse How to Know Youre Qualified For Your Job Unless you’re the most confident person on the face of the earth, I bet you can think of a few times when you thought that your boss made a mistake by hiring you. Maybe the company was tired of recruiting for the job, or maybe HR thought, “Eh, he’s good enough. Let’s give him a shot and see if he falls on his face.” I know I’m prone to letting this impostor syndrome consume me to the point where I’ll often stare at a blank document and think to myself, “I can’t believe they trust me to write this.” The truth is that you didn’t get your job because you happened to get lucky, or because your boss grew tired of not having some extra help, or any other reason you think you happened to land the position by chance. You got it because you deserve to be there. When you’re feeling otherwise, remember this: 1. A Lot of People Had to Say Yes Considering it typically takes 52 days to fill an opening, this isn’t a rushed process that people are hurrying though. Sure, some companies have shorter interview timelines than others, but that doesn’t negate the fact that you likely had to convince a team of people that you were the right person for the job. Don’t forget the first step of submitting your materials: A human looked at your tailored resume, personalized cover letter, and said, “Yes, this person’s qualified enough to bring in to interview.” So, right off the bat, you checked off a lot of boxes. Then, your boss (and anyone else you met with during the interview process) was so impressed by meeting you in person that they all said yes, too. 2. You Beat the Odds Let the facts speak for themselves: The average resume only gets a six-second glance and the average job listing gets 250 candidates. Almost right away your skill set made you stand out from a lot of people. It’s important in to remember in those moments of self-doubt how much work you did during the job search to land where you are now. Think back to those long days you spent writing the perfect cover letter opening, nitpicking over your resume, and researching the company. When you take inventory of all the things you did just to get the interview, you’ll quickly realize that it wasn’t an accident that you were able to convince your boss that you would be awesome. You put a lot of thought and effort into it. 3. You Really Are That Awesome Ultimately, the fact that you got your job boils down to this: You were the right amount of awesome for the gig. I know that’s hard to believe (trust me, I struggle with this all the time), but do yourself a favor and take a minute to write down all the things that you know you’re good at. For me, I often forget that I have a master’s degree in creative writing. And even more typically, I forget that I didn’t get into that program by chance either. So, every now and again, let yourself reflect on all the things that got you to where you are in your career. If that means reminding yourself that you’ve kicked ass at a lot of relevant jobs before getting this one, that’s great. If that means looking back on previous projects you received lots of praise for, that’s also a solid way to remind yourself that you aren’t a fraud. Figure out a way to tell yourself that you’re awesome, and lean on that whenever you feel like you lucked into your job. I know it’s hard to think that you only got to where you are now because you’re lucky. And of course, a lot of things had to line up to get you to the offer stage. But here’s the thing: A lot of those things that have to work out along the way, worked out because you were the right person for the gig. And while I know that’s hard to believe, trust me. When I was a recruiter, I wouldn’t have been doing my job if I let hiring managers settle on just anyone. So, take a deep breath, know that you’re awesome, and get back to work.

How to Deal With a Job You Hate

How to Deal With a Job You Hate How to Deal With a Job You Hate Make the Most of It: What to Do When You Hate Your Job A “glass half full” mentality can make all the difference. The economy has been steadily recovering since the 2008 recession, but we aren't out of the woods yet. With employment opportunities still limited, the competition in the job market is fierce. Getting a paying job is not a sure thing. Knowing this, the focus of many professionals has shifted away from finding a career you love to taking the job you can get. However, that does not mean you have to give up the hope of building a highly fulfilling and enjoyable career you love. More than anything, this economy stresses the importance of making job decisions that help you find your career path instead of landing you directly to the highly lucrative and exciting destination. How do you set yourself up for success while still showing up at a job that does not exactly light you up? Here are five ideas to try. 1. Focus on what's right in your job Let's be honest every job has its pluses and minuses. No matter where you find yourself, there will always be tasks, people, and pressures that you don't enjoy. Instead of zooming in on the negative factors, make a conscious decision to focus on what's right. How do you do that when a day at the office looks like an endless stretch of drudgery? By going back to why you accepted this job in the first place. Perhaps it was the pay, the easy commute, the opportunity to work with people you enjoy, or the chance to get some experience in your professional field. Regardless of what your personal reasons were, revisit them and find a way to remind yourself of them daily. Challenge yourself to actively look for things at work that make you smile, get you excited, or bring you joy. A weekly sushi lunch out with your co-worker? Excellent coffee in the office? A sense of accomplishment when a report is done? Set a goal of finding at least three things for which you are grateful at work every day; perhaps try writing them down to keep yourself accountable. This exercise may look simple, but it can do wonders for turning your attitude around. 2. Fix what can be fixed A proactive focus on what's right does not mean you must pretend that everything at work is rosy. Be honest with yourself about what's not working for you. Do you have a hard time concentrating in a noisy cubicle? Does the repetitive nature of your tasks make you want to climb the walls? Does your boss seem unappreciative or unreasonable? Make a list of things, people, and tasks that you don't enjoy, then look at each item to determine whether something can be done about it. Is there a way to create templates, automate, or somehow optimize the tasks that are boring and repetitive? Could you ask to be relocated to another cubicle away from noisy neighbors or sell your manager on the idea of working remotely for a portion of the week? Are there professionals who have a good relationship with your boss? If so, what are they doing differently from you? If a pain point does not seem to have an immediate solution within your reach, acknowledge it and work on ways to minimize its impact on your day. Stay away from negative co-workers, find a great soundtrack to make stuffing envelopes go quicker, and create bright spots in the day that you can look forward to like chocolate cookies after a particularly painful meeting or a nice plant for your desk. Related:How to Stay Motivated at Work 3. Clarify your career path Just because you have this job today does not mean you are stuck here for the rest of your working life. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a typical professional changes an average of 11 or more jobs over the course of their career, so learn to view any position as a step along your path. This gets easier if you know where you want to go. Begin with getting some clarity around your career goals, and then determine what you are willing to give up in exchange for what you want. For example, some professionals may consciously choose to grit their teeth through a high-intensity or high-pressure job so that they can have more options or boost their earning potential with two to three years of highly valuable experience under their belts. 4. Actively seek out job opportunities Having goals is helpful, but moving up and finding a career that you love takes knocking on many doors and being ready for job opportunities when they arise. The more proactive you are in networking with other professionals, volunteering, taking on different responsibilities, and trying new things, the greater your chances of landing a job that you love. 5. Keep a clear head The most difficult thing about holding down a job you don't love is not sabotaging yourself in the process the temptation to slack off, mutter a snarky comment, or just throw in a towel can be strong. Be clear on your personal do not cross lines, avoid situations that turn abusive or unethical, and know what it would take for you to leave. Short of those boundaries, keep your eye on the ball and remember that this job is just a stepping stone. Sometimes difficult jobs offer the best learning opportunities. To make the most of a job you don't love, consider applying a lesson from the organizing master Marie Kondo: begin with gratitude. After all, you are getting something out of having this position! A paycheck can allow you to have financial independence, buy things that bring you joy, or build up a financial reserve that will serve as a bridge to your next job opportunity. Plus, a job with boring and repetitive tasks might teach you how much you value the ability to be creative and the opportunity to solve a tough puzzle. A job you don't love may also prove to be a powerful motivator and catalyst for change. No matter what your job situation is, find ways to be thankful for what it gives you. You'll find that this attitude allows you to use any job to create your own perfect outcome. Click on the following link for more workplace advice. Will your resume land you the job you'll love? Negotiating a Bigger Sales Package

Negotiating a Bigger Sales Package Negotiating a Bigger Sales Package Definitions of and suggestions for eight types of sales compensation packagesIf your initial offer isn’t big enough and you’re in sales, instead of negotiating more salary, you can negotiate a bigger salary package. Here are some of the more common combinations: straight commission variable commission draw against commission advance against commission base plus commission salary salary and bonus residual commision I will define them here and discuss the rationale behind each package:Straight commission Sometimes straight-commission jobs are the bottom of the sales barrel â€" the company isn’t willing to invest anything in you. Sink or swim. Good luck. On the other hand, a straight commission puts your income in your control. On straight commission, your compensation is strictly a percentage of your sales. To many people that arrangement seems like the most risky, but it’s actually the purist compensation. If you sell well, you’re safe; no one will fire you. If you sell great, you’re not only secure, you can practically write your own ticket.Bottom line, every job is “straight commission” of a sort. If you don’t bring in more than they’re paying you â€" you’re fired. Draws and advances are not gifts; they come out of your sales. They simply represent payment ahead of time of a portion of your future earnings. If you don’t sell, you’re no more secure on salary than on commission. The best salespeople love straight commission because they know they get every dolla r that’s coming to them and that their income is entirely in their control. However, straight commission is not practical if you can’t make sales right away. When the sales cycle is lengthy, straight commission is ordinarily not workable.Negotiating tip: See if you can get the commission percentage increased or tiered (increased at certain intervals of sales).Variable commission Same as straight commission, but the rate goes up or down depending on sales circumstances. You might be paid a higher commission on new accounts, on larger sales or on total volume over a certain amount.Negotiating tip: An increase in commission rate for top performance can be very lucrative and motivating.Draw against commission Also straight commission, except the employer lets you draw a certain amount of money each pay period to help you get started. So if you have a $3,000 draw and you make only $2,000 in commissions, you would get a check for $3,000 and pay the company $1,000 back out of future earnings. Most draws are “forgivable,” which means that if the job isn’t working out you could quit and not have to pay back any money you owed the company. Draws may last indefinitely or for a specified number of weeks or months, and the draw itself may be reduced or increased over time.Negotiating tip: Do check this out, and negotiate it as “no payback” if you can.Advance against commission Like a draw, but it is normally an occasional, rather than a continual, event. It usually will not exceed the amount of commissions already earned.Negotiating tip: Try to get an advance if they’re not willing to give you a base and you need more money to cover your life expenses while on the job.Base plus commission This is the same as ‘salary plus commission.’ Here the company pays you a certain salary, called your base. That’s yours to keep and rely on. Above that, the company gives you a commission according to a mutually agreed-upon formula. Most sales groups use this combination. The longer the sales cycle, the higher the base needs to be.Negotiating tip: Base salary first, then commission rates and tiers.Salary Some sales jobs pay a straight salary; no commission. These jobs almost always come with bonuses. If not, you can try to negotiate one. Some companies like to advertise “no pressure â€" our sales people are not on commission, they are there to help you.” As referenced above, all sales jobs â€" all jobs for that matter â€" are ultimately straight commission. So a salary may take the pressure off any individual sale, but rest assured you have to earn your keep.Negotiating tip: Follow the normal salary negotiating rules.Salary and bonus A bonus is a one-time payment of a fixed amount of money for achieving a certain volume of sales. It could be a weekly, monthly, quarterly or even annual bonus - or a bonus that automatically kicks in when you reach your goal.Negotiating tip: Bonuses usually have to be uniform across the sales force, but you can still try to negotiate it higher â€" there’s nothing to lose in asking.Residual commission This is a type of commission that keeps on paying even if you quit the company. In insurance sales, for instance, after you’ve been with the company for a certain length of time, you’re entitled, for a period of time, to a commission on the payments clients make to the policies you sold them whether or not you work for the company any longer. When your sales work involves a lot of new-account generation, you would be wise to negotiate a residual commission on those new accounts. The justification here is that the reward for selling the account belongs to you; after you leave and the account is maintained, a portion of the income should still be yours for a while.Negotiating tip: Negotiate both the commission rate and the duration.Watch out! Don’t get cheated out of your commissions when you leave. One of the most common, but avoidable, misfortunes in negotiating sales commissions is not being clear about what happens when you leave the company.Whatever your commission structure is, make sure you get clear exactly how commissions and pay are handled when you leave the company. What sales do you get paid on, and when is the payment due? Often, commissions are payable when the client pays, not when the client is billed. Those payments may lag several months after the sale is made. Get it in writing now, when you begin. You don’t want to fight this battle when you’re gone; you’d lose. So, when the salary isn’t good enough, negotiate a draw, a bump in commission, a performance bonus or residuals. There are lots of ways to sweeten an offer.

5 Mistakes to Sidestep During a Salary Negotiation With a Candidate

5 Mistakes to Sidestep During a Salary Negotiation With a Candidate 5 Mistakes to Sidestep During a Salary Negotiation With a Candidate If you’re a hiring manager, you may be interested to know that more than six in 10 executives polled in a Robert Half survey said they’re willing to negotiate starting salary. And no doubt, the best candidates know this. The better the candidate, the more likely you need to be ready for salary negotiation when the time comes. Get a head start by taking a look at these five common mistakes managers make when attempting to close a deal: 1. Being unprepared Many of today’s savvy job candidates show up at the negotiating table organized, having done their research on how to get what they want. You should be prepared, too. Before you discuss salary, make sure you’ve benchmarked your offerings. Is the position harder to fill than last time you hired? Use resources such as the most recent Salary Guides from Robert Half as a reference. 2. Agreeing to a salary that’s too high Not much can kill the spirit of teamwork in your office quite like beginning a new hire at a higher rate than your current staff. While you may think salaries remain secret, eventually they often get out, especially in a small business setting. It’s best to set a maximum amount you’re willing to offer a job candidate so there’s a reasonable degree of internal equity. In case the candidate does reveal his salary, you won’t have to worry about disgruntled coworkers. HIRING? WE CAN HELP! 3. Thinking it’s all about the money Salary itself isn’t the only part of the salary negotiation equation. If a job candidate isn’t satisfied with the starting salary, remind him of the intangibles related to the position such as opportunities to learn and grow with the organization and the benefits package. Still not budging? Here are some other perks you might offer: Telecommuting Flexible work hours Opportunities to attend seminars and conferences Discounted gym membership 4. Playing games Salary negotiation is essentially bargaining: You’re trying to get what you want (a great employee) at the lowest possible cost. A back and forth is inherent in the process, but don’t let it lead to playing games. Respect and be honest with the job candidate and with yourself during salary negotiation. Always keep in mind your workplace needs and how easy or difficult you believe filling the position will be. Plus, don’t let factors such as the halo effect - focusing on one positive attribute of a candidate and ignoring everything else - taint your judgment during the process. Sometimes you have to let a great candidate go if you can’t strike a reasonable deal. 5. Getting caught up in the moment Don't become so engrossed in negotiating that you forget what’s important to your organization. Sometimes, you just have to walk away. If your attempts to woo a reluctant candidate fall short, the best thing to do in many cases is to cut your losses and look somewhere else. The goal at this point should be to end the process so that the candidate leaves with a feeling of being treated fairly and with dignity. Don’t burn the bridge: You never know when your paths may cross again. This post has been updated to reflect more current information.
